Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

This disorder affects approximately 2 percent of adults, predominantly young women. It is characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image and behavior. There is a high rate of self-injury without suicidal intent, as well as a significant rate of attempted suicides and completed suicides in severe cases. Environmental and genetic factors are believed to be involved in BPD. Many, but not all with BPD report a history of abuse, neglect or separation as young children.
