What are Atypical Antipsychotics?

Atypical means something different or unusual. The newer antipsychotic medications are often referred to as “atypical” because they work on different neurotransmitters, (chemical messengers in the brain) than conventional antipsychotics. Some of the newer atypical antipsychotics cause fewer side affects and typically work better at addressing negative symptoms.
